The World Trade organisation continues to meet with opposition, for
its destructive social and ecological agenda, from many sectors of the
world community.
WTO's meeting in Montreal next week is seen as an important barometer for both WTO officials and anti-WTO protestors, as many believe it will set the pace for the success of the next major round of WTO negotiations in the high-profile tourist destination, Cancun, Mexico this coming September.
Major protests are planned for Cancun as well as solidarity actions worldwide. Some activists believe that "disrupting the meeting could have a real impact on the ability of WTO to make its comeback."
Protesters effectively shut down the Seattle WTO Ministerial in 1999, so in 2001 the WTO held its fourth ministerial, beyond the range of protesters, in Doha, Qatar - a country where democratic freedoms are severely limited. This tactic was condemned rather soundly, WTO had shown the world that it would practice 'non-transparency' and could not come to terms with the ideas of democracy.
Oxfam Response to Draft Cancun Declaration: Text fails to deliver on development agenda
"The draft is a barometer for judging the state of world trade talks, and it's falling fast," said Oxfam. "There is very stormy weather ahead for the WTO unless the rich countries make some concessions to developing countries, and quickly."
